Bull City Burger and Brewery - Golden Bull
As big fans of Willy Wonka, the original movie, we thought we’d have our own golden tickets, err bulls that is. We have hidden five golden bulls (okay they are brass, we couldn’t afford solid gold) in and around Durham for five lucky winners to win a free meal each week for a year*. Each day we reveal more clues here on our website where to find a lucky bull. If you find one, you must claim it for the prize. Full details below in the “fine print.” Let the hunt begin.
*The contest begins the first Monday in March and ends when all bulls are found. The first free burger day for winners is April 1st or the first day in April BCBB is open. The last day of free burgers is the first Monday in March the following year. Must be 18 years or older to claim a prize. IDs will be checked. Bring your ID. One Golden Bull winner per person and per family. If you find a Golden Bull redeem it in person at Bull City Burger and Brewery during regular business hours . Please email us to let us know you are coming in at (moocow[at]bullcityburgerandbrewery[dot]com). Winners receive one hamburger or veggie burger per week with one $1 topping, one regular dirty fry order and one non-alcohol beverage of choice. No substitutions for specialty burgers or special features. Can’t be used toward a specialty burger. No alcohol included. A week is defined as any hours BCBB is open for business Sunday through Saturday. BCBB cannot be held accountable for acts of God, weather, and business interruptions during any week. Only one free burger meal can be claimed per week. Cannot be used online. Multiple burgers cannot be saved up for redemption in one week. Only the person claiming the Golden Bull can receive the free burger each week. No family members, spouses, former spouses, children, cousins (kissing or otherwise) can claim your prize. Winners consent to the use of their names and photos or likeness by BCBB to promote the contest on the website, in the restaurant and in print. Again, we will check your ID. No employee of BCBB can win. No employee of a business we partner with for the Golden Bull can win. One winner per family please. No repeat winners. No scammers, no loophole finders, no twisters of the rules. It’s free burgers for about a year, that’s pretty good. That’s our fine print.

Golden Bull #1 Monday March 5th
Clue 1: Beer:Deustche:Español:Français:Italiano
Clue 2: Myli, nemyli.. Myli, nemyli.. Spring is coming, love is in the air,
let's play this game together if you dare.
Clue 3: La casa de poder de comida
Bull #1 was found by Aurelia D. and claimed on Thursday March 8th.
Here’s our cloudy thinking on the first bull’s clues:
This bull’s clues were all themed around language. The first clue was the word for beer in four languages which each first letter in order were BCBB. In the front window of the BCBB brewery (ie. where beer is made) on one of the giant stainless steel tanks was the giant font puzzle piece: |77|2: The second clue was Lithuanian for, she loves me, she loves me not. This game is traditionally played with a daisy flower and we put a growler with a daisy and the next puzzle piece at Daisy Cakes on Foster St., //600.61 A lot of folks poked around BCBB on day 1, but didn’t see that first puzzle piece. We figured when you went to Daisy Cakes and saw the puzzle piece, plus the FB post reminding folks to collect puzzle pieces, would get some return visits to BCBB to find that first clue. The final clue was Spanish for a powerhouse of food, i.e. Watts Grocery. On the bar was a growler with the clue, /JY2NF These clues in order are part of LEET (1337) speak. A language where numbers and slashes translate to characters. Check it out on the web. There was an extra hint on Facebook saying it would be “leat” if they found the bull. Leet was intentionally mistyped for either Leet or perhaps neat to call attention to the word. Putting these three clues together you get: |77|2://600.61/JY2NF which when translated from leet is: http://goo.gl/JY2NF. This URL leads you to the Open Durham entry for the corner of Elizabeth Street and Gilbert, and Seeds garden. Aurelia found the bull at Seeds. Thanks to Seeds, Daisy Cakes, and Watts for playing along. They didn’t know they were even helping until the day of the clue! And thank you to everyone who spent time working on the clues. Ready for the next bull? The hunt for Golden Bull #2 begins on Monday, March 12th. We’ll give you a weekend to recover, and to sharpen you thinking hats and put on your pencils.
Ground Rules for the Hunt: Please do not destroy any personal property. No bull will be hidden in a location which requires going inside a non-public space. No bull will be buried or sealed inside anything. Nothing will need to be damaged, broken, taken apart, busted, cracked, or dismantled. Please respect any and all people, businesses, or property while you search. Thank you and good luck!
Golden Bull #2 Monday March 12th
Clue 1: Famous restaurant with a blue plate special but, no mas.
Clue 2: They wore no clothes and ran for a quart of liquor.
Clue 3: Polo, now you’re cooking with gas.
Clue 4: 1,2,3 Kodachrome. Steadfast colors for your photos.
Clue 5: Martin Luther King Jr., Julienne Moore, Rhett the Terrier
Bull #2 was claimed by Richard A. on March 15th. Well done Richard.
Our cloudy thinking on Golden Bull #2:
This bull was loosely themed on where our beer is sold outside of BCBB.
The first clue references Sams Bluelight beer shop. It was once a restaurant and mas is Sam backwards. At Sams above our growlers was the puzzle piece H2. Clue 2 is a reference to Pinhook where our beer is on tap. We had the puzzle piece O in the window. Clue 3 references Marco (Polo) Shaw, Chef/Owner of Piedmont (Natural Gas) restaurant which will be serving our beer on tap very soon. The puzzle piece in the window was ‘Bono.’ Clue 4 references Reliable (Steadfast) Cheese (1,2,3 take a photo say cheese!) which sells our growlers. The puzzle piece in the window was ‘Pro.’ Clue 5 was pretty cool. All the names refer to Boston University, which is also called BU, which is like Beyu Cafe. We hope to have our third tap handle there soon, but they don’t know that yet! The puzzle piece there read ‘Publico.’ The clues add up to H2O (Water) and Pro Bono Publico which was the first tobacco produced at American Tobacco by the Duke Family and is the name of our Porter. The Bull was hidden in the water stream at American Tobacco on a group of rocks.
Golden Bull #3 Saturday March 17th
A note about Bull #3 - The third bull will be a one day bull hunt. You get just one clue Saturday morning and it will be a race to to the clues and golden bull. Get ready it will be fast and furious.
Please do not deface, remove, touch, disgorge, disembowel, dismantle, disfigure, or do anything to any clues which will change to course of history for any Golden Bull hunter to follow. If caught doing so, you will be disqualified from any and all future Golden Bull hunts for life. Thank you.
Your one and only clue is this photos. If you find the bull today, you rock!
Golden Bull #3 was claimed by Hilary on March 17th, St. Patty’s Day.
Congratulations Hilary.
All the clues were pictures themed around music and art. Every photo had the
BCBB logo on it to hopefully avoid confusion about clues. This first clue was
to take you to Golden Belt and Dogstar Tattoo. At Dogstar, there was a photo
of a car with a roof rack or a car rack or...Carrack to take you to the Carrack sculpture art gallery. At the Carrack
there was a picture of the two movie posters currently showing at the Carolina Theater. At the Carolina Theater was a picture showing a Back to the Future Delorean, bread, and ping pong all references to Motorco, a former car dealer and bakery. At Motorco was a picture of sheet music with all off beats. This took you to Offbeat Music which has a bulletin board with a piece of paper showing the lyrics to YMCA and our logo on the paper. The bull was waiting patiently under the edge of a giant rock at the corner of Foster and West Morgan streets across from the parking deck. Hilary and Janet found the bull along with their keen bull hunting pups and Hilary will enjoy burgers (or veggie burgers) for a year.
Golden Bull #4 Tuesday March 20
Bull #4 will be finished in three days. We’ll give you three clues. You find the the three puzzle pieces. Good luck.
Clue #1: Might Jewish Penicillin help this British Actress’ failing eyesight?
Clue #2: Too much stress is bad for your health, enjoy an interval of relief
Clue #3: Old MacDonald had a pharm
The fourth bull was claimed by Brian M. Congratulations Brian. Here’s how it went.
The fourth bull’s clues were themed around medicine and health. The first clue answer is Chicken Soup and Dame Judi Dench with her failing eyesight, which was a reference to Dame’s Chicken and Waffle. At Dame’s there was a puzzle piece, the number 26. The second clue was a reference to Respite Cafe, where we posted the number 33. Then the final clue was a reference to the MacDonald Pharmacy on 9th street which is now the Ox and Rabbit. There we posted “El Toro.” The original Durham Athletic Park, prior to the new Bull’s stadium, was called El Toro from from 1926 to 1933. A cool historical fact. The bull was put on a ledge on a blue metal pole in the outfield and fully accessible by hand from the outside of the fence and within reach of most regular height folks.
Bull #5 comes out next week after our first birthday party. You are all invited to the party on Sunday.

Golden Bull #5 Tuesday March 27
Are you ready for the final Golden Bull? It is possible to solve all the clues from a
computer, but you will need to be quite the sleuth. You are collecting
puzzle pieces. This final bull is a real challenge. When you have the
bull, please email to arrange a time to claim your prize.
Clue #1: Exodus 32:4
Clue #2: James E. Shepard 1:8
Clue #3: Washington Duke 2:8
Clue #4: Bell on Orange 1:27
Clue #5: Bronze Arcs 1:54
Bonus Clue #1: What do Lady Liberty in NY, Rocky in Philadelphia and Lincoln in Washington DC all have in common?
Congratulations to Steve O. for finding the final Golden Bull. This proved a difficult hunt for most people. The theme behind this bull was about school/learning/education and was supposed to be solvable from home for those who can’t always get out during the day. Here was the thinking on the bull.
Clue #1 was a biblical reference to the scripture about the golden calf, which was also sometimes referred to as a statue. The rest of the clues are references to statues around Durham with the numbers pointing to specific words in the inscriptions of the statues. Note that a statue with a name like James E. Shepard has just one sentence so the first sentence, eighth word would be written at 1:8. All of the inscriptions and the statues can be found on-line to read.
The answers:
Clue #2: Durham (Statue on Duke Campus)
Clue #3: Institution (Statue on NCCU Campus)
Clue #4: Public (Historic marker/statue on Parrish Street)
Clue #5: School (Historic marker/statue on Parrish Street)
The bull was on the side steps at the DPS headquarters around the corner from BCBB on Cleveland Street. Great job Steve. Thanks to everyone who participated this year. By the way, the next hint, if the bull was not found, was going to be: Mickey Mouse’s girlfriend, which is of course Minnie, a reference to Minnie Fort-Brown, chair of the school board.
Addendum: Thanks to Ken D. for letting us know that the actual statues’ texts varied on-line vs. real life. We had no idea there were some slight variations. All of our clues were based on what we found on-line in the hopes of making it fair for more people to play along. Some had an extra word on the statue and some had an extra word in the on-line printed version. This would have thrown off the word counts. We apologize for that. That’s the last time we trust the internet!
